Intel Centrino Sonoma Alviso Pentium-M Mobile CPU Info
The Sonoma CPU processor the
'Dothan' Pentium-M will use the new Sonoma system mobile 915 chipset
called 'Alviso' and is joined with the new Intel Pro/Wireless
network. These new Intel Dothan Sonoma Centrino Pentium-M mobile CPU
processor with 2MB L2 cache will have a faster FSB of 533MHz or
133MHz QDR which gives a peak bandwidth of 4.2GB/sec. An increase
from 400MHz and 3.2GB/sec.
These Centrino Sonoma mobile
CPU processor are supported by the Intel 915GM chipset now supports
both DDR & DDR2 memory up to DDR2 553 in dual-channel mode for a
bandwidth of 8.5GB/sec or 4.2GB/sec in single-channel mode & FSB of
533MHz & 400MHz while the Intel 915GMS only supports 400MHz FSB and
DDR2 400 in single channel mode. Both with a max memory capacity of
up to 2GB. The 915PM does not have the graphics engine but supports
DDR2 533MHz in dual & single channel and 400/500MHz FSB.
With DDR2 memory operating at
only 1.8 volts they use less power than DDR memory which all adds to
help prolonging battery life of these Centrino Sonoma mobile CPU
processor platforms. The 915 chipset brings Intel High Definition
Audio and the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 in the 915GM &
915GMS chipset versions along with support for PCI Express x16.
This has DirectX 9 support,
OpenGL 1.4 support & 4 pixel pipelines and can dynamically access up
to 224MB of memory for data processing while offering a maximum
bandwidth of 8.5GB/s in dual-channel DDR2 553MHz mode. So making
sure you buy a Centrino Sonoma mobile notebook with plenty of
dual-channel DDR2 533 memory is a must for decent performance.
The new Intel PRO/Wireless has
tri-mode WLAN to have compatibility with all wireless environments.
The new ICH6-M south bridge is much the same as the ICH6 and has
support for up to four SATA drives but no RAID support. There is
also support for eight USB 2.0 ports, four PCI-E x1 ports.
Notebook slots may well be
used for PCI-E connections and this new standard will be available
in two types, Express Card54 & Express Card34 according to its
width. The cards can communicate by either the PCI-E or USB bus and
slots will be called PC Express Card slots. With the higher
bandwidth of PCI-E x1 HDTV could be offered.
The Centrino Sonoma CPU processor also includes the Intel Execute
Disable Bit for security in these new Pentium M processors to help
combat viruses & worms etc. which uses the system of stopping code
not intended to be run in main memory from doing just that, such as
a virus. Microsoft Windows XP SP2 spots this feature and so protects
your mobile computer. This is much the same as the AMD EVP.
